Brief Description
The American College of Surgeons (ACS) International Relations Committee is happy to offer travel prizes for surgeons between the ages of 30 and 50. International surgeons are given the chance to attend and take part in all of the educational events of the ACS annual Clinical Congress Thanks to these prizes, each worth $4,000 a piece. They are primarily intended to assist surgeons who practice in community or regional hospitals or clinics outside of the United States and Canada, as well as those who come from university surgical departments with limited resources.
The Doctors Duremdes family has generously sponsored a new Community Surgeon Travel Award intended for Filipino surgeons. It favors deserving candidates from the Philippine province of Iloilo, Panay Island, and rural areas. Eligibility Criteria
All applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for the Community Surgeons Travel Awards For Developing Countries at the American College of Surgeons, USA 2023-24:
- Candidates must be recent graduates of medical schools who have also finished their surgical training.
- A full application must be submitted by a candidate who is at least 30 years old but under 50.
- Applications must be submitted from the applicant’s expected permanent address. After completing all formal training (including fellowships and scholarships), applications will only be approved for processing when the candidates have worked in surgical practice, teaching, or research for a minimum of one year in their desired permanent location.
- The applicants’ dedication to excellent surgery, surgical training, and expanding community access to surgical care must be demonstrated.
- The college’s online application form, which is offered to applicants, must be properly filled out and submitted. The application must be presented in English, as must any supporting documentation. A curriculum vitae alone cannot be submitted.
- Candidates without prior training or surgical fellowships in the United States or Canada will be given preference.
- Applications require three (3) separate letters of recommendation written by coworkers. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons who live in their nation or the chair of the department in which they have a clinical or academic post must write the other letter. The letter from the chair or fellow should specifically mention the applicant’s dedication to superior surgery, surgical teaching, and expanding local access to surgical care. The individuals writing the recommendations should present letters of recommendation.
- The year for which the Community Surgeon Travel Awards are designated is when they must be used. They are not movable.
- Upon their return to their home country, awardees are required to submit a written report that focuses on the importance of the visit to them personally as well as any potential positive effects on local patients.
- Reapplying is only permitted twice, and each time, a fresh application and accompanying materials must be filled out and submitted.
